Resources for Crochet Symbols

I'm seeing more and more patterns that have schematics with crochet symbols in addition to the written instructions.  I really haven't worked with crochet symbols that much, but I can see how a stitch diagram could really help in making an intricate design.  So, look out for some posts in the future about crochet symbols, but in the mean time, check out my new tip on Lifetips with resources for crochet symbols.

Clownie Has A Face!!

Oooof, it has been so hot around here this past week, it's been hard to do anything, but I keep plugging away on Clownie.  And now, he's got a face.  I wanted him to have a sweet face since I think this particular clownie is intended for a baby.  What do you think?!

My friend rightly pointed out that a pom pom nose is NOT appropriate for a baby, so I am going to experiment with sewing on the nose also.  Now, I'm really getting to the fun part, putting clownie's pieces all together!

I've been adding some new tips to the http://www.crochet.lifetips.com/ site.  I don't know why a number of patterns these days use the term "2dctog" rather than "1 dec".  It's the same thing -- make a decrease stitch -- but I think the latter term is more descriptive.  Anyway, just wanted to mention it since I've gotten a number of questions recently on how to make a "2__tog".

Ok, back to clownie!

Crochet News

What can I say, it's Wednesday, and I'm up because the hubby had to go to work early today.  So, here I am :-)

Thought I would take this opportunity to tell you about a new (knit and) crochet magazine that I found in Barnes and Noble a few months ago.  It's called "Knit & Crochet Style" and it's printed in Germany but written in English.  There seem to be 2 issues so far, but it's not clear to me if it's a monthly publication.  The first issue has both knit and crocheted sweaters and tops for women, and the second issue has baby items.  I haven't made anything yet, but I get the feeling it is written with English (v. American) crochet terms.  But, there are a lot of photographs and schematics, so I'm hoping I can figure it out.  I'll report back.

I'm still refining the crochet tips book on Lifetips -- I'm awaiting their software upgrade so that I can get that project put to bed!  The delay has been frustrating, but in a way, it's motivated me to keep cleaning up and organizing the site and to start work already on the sequel!

I will leave with a teaser -- for those of you living in or near Washington DC, it looks more and more certain that there will be a yarn store in Dupont Circle in the fall!!  Whoooo, hoooo.  I will know more in the next few weeks and will blab then :-)

Lifetips

Mmm, making progress on the 101 Crochet Tips in 101 Days!  Check out the site, I just added a whole bunch of really good tricks and techniques ;-)

Also, a necklace to go with the bracelet is almost ready.

I missed the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival this past weekend.  Every year, something seems to come up that prevents me from going.  This year, I think it was sheer laziness!  It is quite a trek to get there, so what can I say?!  At least there's another festival coming up in the fall in Virginia, so perhaps I'll pull myself together for that one.

Ok, I'm keeping it short this post, but let me leave you with yet another tidbit to chew on -- have you done some research on your competitors?  Who else out there is selling rhinestone widgets?  What are the differences between your product and theirs?  Hard to believe, but the fact that there are such sellers out there is actually a good sign for you -- it means there's a market for your product, and if it's trending up, then there's room for you too.  So, get to your research!

What's in a Name?

Ah, finally, the end of a very busy week.  Though, now I am trapped inside, trying to catch up on things that didn't get done during the week, on this beautiful day.  Well, I'll probably sneak outside a little later to catch some rays and fresh air.

So, I don't have too much to report at this point.  I'm working on a necklace to go with the golden bangle.  I still have to finish Mom's Vest (yes, I know, I know...) and I've got tons of ideas swimming through my head, but a lack of time and energy.  Yes, the energy is lacking because it's all been going into trying to get the 101 Crochet Tips book done!  I'm happy with my progress on it so far, but it feels like there's still a lot to do.

But, let me leave you with another entrepreneurial thought before I go:  What's in a Name?  I know, a rose smells as sweet no matter what you call it, but you need to think about a good name for your business, one that will make sense to your potential customers or at least grow to make sense.  I chose Many Creative Gifts because I wanted to leave room for other items besides just crocheted ones.  I liked the play on words too (my many gifts in terms of creativity as well as the many potential gift items I hope to be able to offer customers).  You, however, might want to pick a more descriptive name if you are sure that you want to concentrate on one type of product or service.  Back to our example of rhinestone widgets -- you might want to go with "Rhinestone Widgets" if it's not already taken.  Or to personalize, you might want to say "Phyllis's Rhinestone Widgets".  Some people just use their own personal name as the name of a business (doesn't seem to have hurt Martha Stewart or Jonathan Adler!).

It's not like you can't change your business name later, but to avoid losing time, money and creating market confusion, spend the time up front to choose a business name that you think captures the essence of your business and what it has to offer (and will have in the future).  Oh, and another really important thing, do NOT search for availability of names on domain name services until you are ready to act -- if you search for a name and then a day or two later, go back to register it, it will most likely be gone!  Computer programs are set up and ready to purchase searched names, and then, they are more than glad to sell you your desired name, for a premium of course!

Ok, back to work for me (or is it time for that outside break yet?!)

SEO and BOGO

SEO, search engine optimization.  I'm still not sure I fully understand how the optimization part of it works, but I do try to think about using "key words" in blog entries and crochet tips on Lifetips.  I watched a webinar today about some new tech tools that Lifetips is rolling out to help us Gurus post more tips and get our books ready, so it was pretty motivating.  I like the fact that they seem re-energized themselves about their mission and seem open to innovative ideas (soon including the posting of YouTube videos!).  I'm looking forward to more webinars, especially the one about SEO.

Oh, but more importantly, a special offer for this anniversary month -- the BOGO offer -- buy one, get one free!  If you buy a pattern on Ravelry (just click on the icon to the left) and send me an email telling which other pattern of the same or lesser price you want, I will email it to you for free :-)  This offer is good until April 30, 2010, and don't worry about registering your information with Ravelry, you will be glad you did.  It's very secure, and they make payment and download so easy!  I'm hoping to get a few new patterns posted soon, so go set up your Ravelry account!

Today's Thought:  Food Rule # 50 -- The banquet is in the first bite.  A great reminder to slow down and enjoy the taste of your food.  As Mr. Pollen says, no bite is as good as the first, and each subsequent bite will give you less and less satisfaction.  We've tried to implement this rule just by slowing down and savoring each bite and trying to stop before we feel all bloated and stuffed.  One strategy we use in restaurants involves cutting everything in half and asking for the doggy bag up front!

Half Way There!

Well, the taxes are just about done, and new tips have been posted on http://www.crochet.lifetips.com/, so I'm on track there too.  The weather here in DC has been amazing, so we've been trying to enjoy it -- so hard to believe that about 2 months ago we were buried in almost 2 feet of snow!

So, I've been thinking a lot lately about how to pull together all of the "mind, body, spirit and crochet" materials I have into a useful book.  I've been doing some additional research into mind topics, like meditation, because, frankly, that's the area that I have really let slip.  I used to meditate at least 3 times a week (still not considered sufficient, but better than nothing).  Now, if I make myself take a deep breath before b*tching and whining about something, I feel victorious!  It's really dawning on me that the excuse "I have no time for xyz" really is an excuse.  We've got 24 hours a day, and we've got choices about how we want to spend that time.  If you're CHOOSING to spend your time on x instead of y, then don't blame it on not having enough time.  I also think it's easy to get caught up in all of the contradictory information we receive everyday -- "you should exercise for an hour every day" v. "20-30 minutes of vigorous exercise 4 times a week is enough".  What should we do?!

For what it's worth, I'm figuring out that you have to customize your own approach to mind, body, spirit (and crochet :-)  Each of us has her or his own trouble spots (my right hip and my neck and shoulders have to be tended to, or they scream!), and we just need to be aware of them and address them in ways that work for us.  All I or anybody, even the experts, can do is give suggestions and general guidelines, but you have to figure out what works, or doesn't, work for you.  Mmmm, and I guess that's my opening statement for the book ;-)

Today's Thought:  Try this approach to addressing the lack of time in your life -- identify 1 hour a day that you can set aside for yourself (or, if you have to, 3 20-minute segments).  Then, spend 20 minutes of that hour reading.  Catch up on all of those magazine articles you've been putting aside or that novel you've been wanting to start or finish.  But, don't spend it on emails or at the computer -- you're already probably on there way too much!  Use the next 20 minutes to exercise.  Even if it means just walking around the block (you can cover a mile in 20 minutes if you're focused and vigorous), going up and down some stairs, or find a yoga routine (Baron Baptiste has some great 20-30 minute segments that work you from top to bottom) that you like.  Your last 20 minutes, start meditating!  Use the time to sit and quiet your mind, clearing it of all thoughts and stresses.  Having a hard time doing it on your own?  Seek out a meditation center in your town or a "MeetUp" group, or start one of your own.  Just anything you can do to step back and get perspective.  I know it'll be hard to do this every day at first, but believe me, you will start to crave it, and you will find that one hour each day to re-energize yourself, and this blog is all about helping you get there!

The Treadmill is Speeding Up!

Ever feel like you are running in place, not getting anywhere?!  Ha, everyday, right!  I think my angst is coming from having really hunkered down to do the taxes this weekend.  Still not done, but I've got it all organized and anticipate putting the final touches and final checks on our returns and my mom's this week and getting them out, whew!

But, on a happier note, I also took a little break this morning from tax land and created a fun flower.  I'll post pix on the next post.  I'm still trying to think of a fun spring project to make use of the April yarn club offering, but I should have that whipped up by the April 15th shipment date.  And, yes, another side of the Mom Vest is done, now to tackle the back.  She gave me some fun big gold buttons that she liked from another jacket that's long gone now to use for the vest, so that's spurring me on to make the final push to finish that project.

For a techie update, as you will recall, I've been trying to figure out how to upload files to my web hosting service (check, I think...) and then make downloads available to you all (not checked off just yet).  But, I think I found a website that might help with this -- "The Blog Doctor" seems to have a lot of stuff on his site, but ironically, it takes a long time to load and all the information is pretty overwhelming.  More to come on this topic!

What a Week!

So, of course, this week was all about catching up on everything that didn't get done during the "Snowmaggedon".  Whew, I'm tired and think I need another chance at being trapped in with snow :-)

My exciting news for the week was that I've been invited to be a guest speaker on a craft blog talk radio show!  I'm in the process of picking a topic and date to be on the show and will provide all the details when they are firmed up.

I've hit 101 tips on the Crochet Guru website, yippee (though I'm not sure if it happened within the self-imposed deadline or not, but whatever).  Now, I need to concentrate though on adding more tips that can be part of the 101 tips booklet I want to put together.  Please, please leave me any questions or suggestions you might have for tips you'd like to see in the book.

Which brings me to Today's Thought, which I'm going to do a little differently today.  I was talking with an amazing woman last night.  She's a crafter and a reiki specialist (but that's for another post).  She wants to start her own business but just hasn't done it.  I think we all struggle with getting started on projects that we know we want to do, but just can't seem to get done.  I think the key is to set an Action Item for yourself.  Just pick one small piece or step in the project to do, putting all the other steps and obstacles out of your mind for now.  For example, I have not worked on Mom's Vest for 2 weeks :-(.  My action item for this weekend is to rework the back panel.  If I do more, great, but all I'm asking of myself is to just get done the back portion -- it's an achievable step for which I know what I need to do.  By telling you all about it (and promising to report back on my progress), I'm hopefully setting up support yet accountability with you all.  That's it, hope this tidbit helps you start something you've been wanting to do, but have not yet started!

Sickie

So, I'm home today, felled by the common cold.  I can't believe it, I dodged the swine flu after two people in my office got it, I scoffed at the 24-hour thing that went around afterwards, and now, I am wandering aimlessly around the house with a box of kleenex under my arm.  It's because I let my guard down.  I was keeping up a terrific pace last week, teaching twice, working on a big project at work, and going out with friends.  I let myself breathe a sigh of relief on Sunday that all was done, and whammo!

At least the splitting headache I had yesterday is gone.  I think the Zycam might be working, but we'll see ...  Now, I struggle with what, if anything, to do.  Part of me says, "take another hit of Nyquil and hit the sack"; the other part of me says, "do something productive."  I do have one work assignment that I should try to do, but that Nyquil hit is starting to look really good.

Today's Thought:  A plug for myself today -- I've got 82 tips up on http://www.crochet.lifetips.com/ and have challenged myself to get to 101 in 10 days.  Check in to see how I'm doing?

Happy New Year!!

Wow, 2010, here we are!

I had such a great day today, I hope it's a sign of how the year is going to go.  I went to Barnes & Noble and found "Inside Crochet", a crochet magazine from England!  I haven't had a chance to really pour through it yet, but one word of caution that I have to remind myself of -- the English use different crochet abbreviations for stitches than we do here in the US.  But, I'm still excited to see how crocheters in other countries approach projects and what they're focusing on in the UK.

I also had lunch with a friend of mine who's currently living in Germany.  I got him to agree to look for crochet magazines for me when he gets back there :-)

I also figured out how to add more "buttons" to the blog for Ravelry and Lifetips, but these were harder because I had to configure the HTML myself to match up the pictures and the website addresses -- I'm feeling like quite the techie ;-)  It really was fun in a way.  Maybe this is the first step in getting me to the point where I can actually tackle doing something with my main website, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, let me just bask in the glory of getting two buttons working right!!

Ok, I need to go get ready now for a private lesson that I've got scheduled for tomorrow morning.  Happy New Year to everyone again, and thanks for reading my blog!

Today's Thoughthttp://www.knitpicks.com/ seems to be very knitters-oriented, but they have an amazing palette of yarns, so might be worth checking out http://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/Palette_Yarn__D5420132.html?intmedid=Bottom1:Palette+Colorwork

NaBloPoMo

Apparently, it is National Blog Posting Month!  One must post at least once a day for the entire month of November.  I don't know if I'll make it, but what the heck, probably worth a try.

So, I guess I should try to come up with some plan for November to make it worth your while to check back to see what I am blogging about each day.  I wish I could commit to creating a project a day for the whole month, but I'm not sure that's realistic.  I think I'll try to come up with a crochet tip a day -- that way, you all will get a jump on tips that I will ultimately post on the Lifetips website.

Ok, so today's tip:  When starting a hat, leave a long tail on the slip knot that you use to start your first round so that you can use it to sew up the hole at the top of the hat if you so desire.

See you back here again tomorrow!

30 Hours a Day

That's how many I think I need in order to actually do everything I need and want to do!  But, if there were 30 hours in each day, could we still get away with sleeping only during 8 of them?!  Well, why bother even contemplating because, unless the earth goes spinning off its axis, my dream of more time per day is not happening.

I need the time because I have so many project ideas going through my head and want to work on them all but the mundane things in life keep infringing on my creativity ;-)  I guess my beef with time is no different than everyone else's, but I just had to get it off my chest.

So, I am making the best use of my time by concentrating on my Ravelry account and trying to post more and more crochet tips on http://www.crochet.lifetips.com/.  I've added a new section on Books and Magazines, hoping to be able to share my views on the various resources out there.  I did notice today that the Crafts section in the Barnes & Noble in downtown DC seems to have expanded, and there was a better-than-usual selection and variety of crochet books.  I had to stop myself from picking up any new ones, considering I have a shelf-full at home that I still need to access.

Anyway, just a quick post to rant and give you a preview of what I'm working on.  More to come as always, stick with me :-)

Today's Thought:  Speaking of time, using an egg timer periodically to time how long it takes you to do certain tasks is a great way to prepare yourself for those times where you're bemoaning the fact that you've got 10 minutes "to kill" and don't think you can get anything done in that time.  It's amazing how much can be accomplished in 10 minutes -- time yourself and see!
